Classrooms, Campuses, and Community: Piedmont School History on Foot
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group says it never rains on Wednesday mornings in Piedmont, but there was a “very heavy mist” last Wednesday morning. It and this being New Year’s Eve reduced the group’s size. Eighteen water-resistant walkers and two of our K-9 best friends were on hand at the Exedra at our regular weekly gathering time. The Piedmont schools were still on their Holiday break and their campuses were open. Piedmont High, Piedmont Mi

The Twelve Days of Christmas, One Street at a Time
It was Christmas Eve last Wednesday and 22 walkers from our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesday group with one K-9 best friend were at the Exedra at our regular time. We claim it never rains on Wednesday mornings in Piedmont and this morning we were right again. It had rained heavily with strong winds during the night, but there were just clouds and plenty of sunshine for our walk. We were mindful of the services that the Piedmont Police and Fire Departmen

From Closet to Command Center: Piedmont’s New Dispatch Hub
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a once in forever opportunity last Wednesday. Piedmont Police Chief Frederick Shavies had invited us to come for a tour of the new Piedmont Police dispatch center. This was a first and last chance to see the center because after it goes operational it will be closed to the public. We were not going to miss it. Over 60 of us with at least five K-9 best friends were at the Exedra and Chief Shavies was too.

Walking the Streets Wallace Alexander Helped Create
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a cool, late-fall morning last Wednesday that turned sunny and great for our weekly walk. It was announced that we will have our annual Holiday pizza lunch at Zachery’s on Grand Avenue. After checking calendars, December 17 th was set for it. We try to get to every safe-walking Piedmont street during the year but two streets we hadn’t walked in their entirety this year were Sea View and King Avenues. Ther

From Walkers to Trotters: A Thanksgiving Eve Tradition
It was a cool, sunny Thanksgiving Eve morning and members of our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group were in front of the Exedra, where we always are at 10:30 AM on Wednesdays. The group was smaller than usual for his holiday week walk with about 30 people and one K-9 best friend on hand. The group was there to work up appetites for our Thanksgiving dinners, but for another reason too. They knew about 2,400 runner/walkers were going to be on this ve

So Close We Could Almost Play: The New Linda Beach Tot Lot
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group’s good luck with the weather continued last Wednesday. Rain was coming in that night, but once again it was just cloudy for our walk. There was large turnout of 52 walkers and four K-9 best friends at the Exedra for it. It was also announced that for the following Wednesday’s walk, on Thanksgiving Eve, Matt G will lead the group on a stroll, not a run, of the Piedmont Turkey Tot 5K route. Some walkers had read

Lost Mansions and Living Streets: Walking Glen Alpine and Sotelo
Last Wednesday our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group got lucky again with the weather. There was very heavy rain the following day, but our Wednesday morning was just cloudy. We were not surprised. We say it never rains during our walks and are almost always right. There was large turnout of 49 walkers and three K-9 best friends at the Exedra ready to enjoy our usually dry, weekly time together. We try to walk every traffic-safe Piedmont street du

Hidden Plaques, Lost Mansions, and Sculpted Bears
Our Piedmont Recreation Department's Walking on Wednesdays group thought our weather luck was going to run out last Wednesday. All week the forecasts had been for a heavy rainstorm to blow through Piedmont Wednesday morning, just when we walk. We claim it never rains on Wednesday mornings in Piedmont, and that turned out to be once again true. It was just cloudy and a little windy when 27 walkers and two equally intrepid K-9 best friends assembled at the Exedra at our usual t

Famous Families, Powerful Women, and the Making of Mountain View Cemetery
This past Wednesday, October 29 th , was just two days before Halloween, and time for our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group’s annual pre-Halloween tour of the Mountain View Cemetery. Instead of meeting at the Exedra we assembled in front of the cemetery’s main mausoleum. There was a big turnout of 54 walkers and three K-9 best friends on hand. This tour for us was conducted for the fifth time by long-time docent Jane Leroe. She is a retired, groun

Witches, Webs, and Walking Shoes
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group is going to have its annual Halloween week tour of the Mountain View Cemetery on next Wednesday, October 29th, but this past Wednesday was not too early to start getting into the spirits of Halloween. There were some spectacular, maybe even “spooktacular”, house decorations around the central part of town and we thought it would be fun to go see them. There was a strong turnout of 46 walkers but only one K-9 bes

From Rainstorms to Runoff Solutions: Walking Grand Avenue’s New Project
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group got lucky again with the weather last Wednesday. It had rained heavily on Monday and Tuesday, but it had cleared by Wednesday morning. In July we had seen some of the sidewalk work that was being done on Grand Avenue, but construction of the City’s first bioswale project had not started. It is at the intersection of Fairview and Grand Avenues and is now complete. The recent rain provided an additional reason t

Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a special walk last week that was led by Jim Kellogg. It was a tour of "Piedmont Heritage Trees" and a brief tour of the "Piedmont Architectural Heritage" that set the foundation for Piedmont’s architectural style that began in 1890. Past Picnic Grounds, Future Homes: A Walk Through Moraga Canyon
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a special walk and guest this past Wednesday. Kevin Jackson, the City’s Planning & Building Director, had generously agreed to meet us at Coaches Field and tell us about the City’s Moraga Canyon Specific Plan for residential real estate development and give us an update. However, before the walk got started, we had three, additional, special, surprise guests waiting for us at the Exedra. Piedmont Police Ch

The Story Beneath the Turf: Hampton Park’s Forgotten School Site
Last Wednesday was the first Wednesday of fall and a milder day than earlier in the week, and our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group was up for a long walk to streets further from the center of town. We hadn’t been to the Marlborough Court this year and climbing up Hampton Road to see it was the plan. But plans but sometimes change. There was a good turnout of 44 walkers and four K-9 best friends at the Exedra for the hike. We headed off, going u
