A Walk into Julia Morgan's Masterpiece: The Chapel of the Chimes
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a good turnout of 42 walkers last Wednesday for another special walk and tour. Walking on Wednesdays makes semi-annual visits to the Mountain View Cemetery but we had never gone to and toured the nearby Chapel of the Chimes Columbarium and Mausoleum. It is open to and welcomes the public. It was an overcast morning and a great day for a good walk and a first-time visit. Walkers who preferred not to make th

From Earthquake to Expansion: The Story of Grand Avenue Heights
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a good turnout of 43 walkers and six K-9 best friends at the Exedra last Wednesday on a mild, overcast morning for our last walk of spring 2026. We had not walked the streets and seen the homes that were part of the early “Grand Avenue Heights” neighborhood development for over two years. The borders of this old piece of largely forgotten Piedmont history were on Grand Avenue, Boulevard Way, and Crofton, F

A Pool Party and a Storybook House: Exploring Huntleigh and Lexford
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group gathered last Wednesday at the Exedra on a warm morning that was forecast to be a “Piedmont hot” day. There was a large turnout of 50 walkers and five K-9 best friends in attendance. There was a big turnout on this hot day because we were going to a pool party. We hadn’t been up to the Huntleigh/Lexford loop off Hampton Road this year, and walker/realtor Stacey I. had a home for sale at 11 Huntleigh Road. She

Piers, Views, and Wistaria: Inside Piedmont’s New Modern Homes
The week before last Wednesday, our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group visited Valant Place, a quiet cul-de-sac off Trestle Glen Road, with realtor and fellow walker Stacey Isaacs. We explored the seldom-visited street and toured a Piedmont home that was for sale. There were two other Piedmont homes on another seldom visited street that we had been monitoring for almost two years. These are new construction homes being built on Wistaria Way on the

Sewer Maps, City Borders, and a Walk to Valant Place
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a rare destination last week. Zillow reported a Piedmont home at 23 Valant Place for sale. This seemed like a mistake because a Piedmont street named Valant Place did sound right, but then it was recalled we walked to Valant, a cul-de-sac off Trestle Glen Road, some years back, but had never returned. Walker/real estate broker Stacey Isaacs was going to meet us at the house for a tour. History about why thi

Roses, Recharging Stations, and a Walk Before Mother’s Day
The Wednesday before Mother’s Day meant it was time for our Piedmont Recreation Department Walking on Wednesdays group’s annual visit to the Morcom Rose Garden up Jean Street on the other side of Grand Avenue. A good turnout of 38 walkers and six K-9 companions gathered at the Exedra on a lovely morning. As we headed down Magnolia Avenue, we passed Nanci's Musiktime near the Exedra, where young children were making music on the grass above the park’s tot lot. Also sponsored

A Walk, a Talk, and Public Safety on King Avenue
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group enjoyed another beautiful walk last week, highlighted by a special “Cop on the Block” visit with officers from the Piedmont Police Department. Forty walkers and five of our K-9 best friends were on hand. This is a community-oriented policing initiative that PPD started in 2023. It is intended to increase officers’ visibility and foster communication, as well as build relationships with residents. Officers con

A Backstage Visit to Piedmont High School’s Alan Harvey Theater
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had another special walk last Wednesday. Rebecca P, Becca to her friends, is the theater coordinator at Piedmont High School. She invited us to come see the school’s Alan Harvey Theater, learn about it and what they were doing, and meet some students who are involved in the school’s drama program. Recent rain reduced our size a little, but there was still a solid turnout of 34 walkers at the Exedra for the tour.

Eight Years, 52 Walkers, and One Historic Cemetery Tour

Linda Park, Oak Woodlands, and an Old Reservoir
There was a strong turnout of over 40 walkers and six K-9 best friends last Wednesday when our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group assembled at the Exedra for our weekly walk. The Piedmont schools were on spring break. The weather was spring-like and the Piedmont Post had reported the pathway through Linda Park’s former off-leash dog area had been reopened. There was also some early Piedmont history associated with this area that we had never consid

Eagles, Hidden Paths, and April Showers in Piedmont
Last Wednesday was April Fool’s Day and our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group may have thought the weather gods and I were trying to fool them when they assembled at the Exedra for their weekly walk. We say it never rains on Wednesday mornings in Piedmont, but the weather forecast said there would be some around 11 AM. Additionally, it was the first Wednesday in April and the American Heart Association’s “National Walking Day.” I had said we could

From Blair’s Pond to Measure UU: The Story of Swimming in Piedmont
Our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group had a record 73 walkers and four K-9 best friends at the Exedra last Wednesday for our weekly walk. It was a lovely morning, but there was a special reason for the big turnout. Piedmont Recreation Director Chelle Putzer was going to give us our very own tour of the new Piedmont Community Pool. The pool will officially open to the public on Saturday, April 11 th , but we were going to get an early look. The poo

A Hot Day in a Hot Housing Market
Last Wednesday was the last Wednesday of winter but for our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group it felt more like summer. The region’s recent heat wave was at its peak so a walk in the center of town was what we wanted to do. Spring was about to start, and it was time for our annual spring check of the Piedmont real estate market. Everyone enjoys seeing homes that are for sale, so even in the hot weather there was a strong turnout of 49 walkers and

Requa, Ransom, and Remarkable Women
It was a sunny, warm, summer-like morning last Wednesday when our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group came together at the Exedra for our weekly walk. It spotlights the contributions of women to our history, culture, and society, and was officially established in the U.S. by Congress in 1987. There was a larg

Victorian Comeback Tour: Piedmont’s Hidden Architectural Gems
On a rainy morning the prior week, members of our Piedmont Recreation Department’s Walking on Wednesdays group went to six Victorian homes in Ann Swift’s 2007 book, "Cottages and Castles – The Centennial Houses of the City of Piedmont." Ann was the Piedmont City Clerk for 22 years from 1988 to 2010 and an unofficial historian for the city of Piedmont. She wrote this book on the city’s 100th anniversary and describes 173 of the city's historic homes that were over 100 years ol
